Moms are known for putting everyone before themselves. We feed our children breakfast, but forget to eat. We make sure our kids are wearing great outfits, but walk around in the same yoga pants day after day. We bathe our little ones every night, but can barely find the time to get a shower in. We do everything to make sure our children are rested, but often walk around in a sleep-deprived daze.
Motherhood is about sacrifice and we do it with love. But when your life revolves around family and work, friendships can easily fall to the wayside. Being a mom can be one of the loneliest callings in the world if you let it be. Here’s how to avoid becoming an island.
1. Join a mom group. These groups usually meet during the day in church basements, public parks or cafes. Locate the ones in your area by calling your city or even your pediatrician’s office for a reference. While it can be intimidating to jump into a group of people who have known each other for a while, the payoff will be friendships that might just last a lifetime.
2. Take a parenting enrichment class. Mommy & Me yoga. Baby gym. Swimming lessons. There are so many options when it comes to parent/child activities. The benefit to these classes is that if you work full time, there are plenty of weekend options too. You’ll be amazed at how playing with your little one in a group setting will help you connect with your community.
3. Meet up with other parents from your child’s preschool, daycare or school. While mornings can often be one big blur, try replacing a distant wave from the car with an actual introduction. Break the ice by talking to other parents about their kiddies, then ask if they live in the area. Next step? Trade contact information! Your children already know each other, so setting up a playdate will be a breeze.
4. Join a local buy and sell group. If you’re like most moms, you’re always on the hunt for a good deal on products for your kids. Not only can you save and make money getting involved in these groups, your daily interactions with the same people may result in some new friendships! 5. Join a book club. If you can sneak in some reading time during your commute to work or after the kids have gone to sleep, joining your peers for a monthly gabfest is a great way to shake off any feelings of loneliness. 6. Plan a mom’s night out! Remember, you’re not just a mom, you’re a WOMAN. With all that you do for your children and family, you deserve to put on a nice dress and go out on the town every now and then. You can organize a night out with your spouse, friends or mom group. The most important thing is to let loose and dance the night away! You’ll come back feeling energized and recharged… unless you bring home a hangover as a souvenir. 😉
