There’s one in every neighborhood. You know, that mom who has it all together. Her kids are never late for school, her house is always spick and span, her clothes are always ironed and she can park both cars in her garage.
If you didn’t know any better, you’d think she came from another planet—or worse—that she hides a blue Lycra suit emblazoned with an “S” in her closet!
Although it’d be easy to believe that this wonder woman possesses supernatural powers and abilities, the truth is that she’s no Supermom (at least not the kind who can fly). She’s just like any other mom in your neighborhood, with one notable exception—she’s figured out how to stay organized.
Before you give up or resign yourself to a messy, tardy life, don’t lose heart! With a little time and effort, you can become the most organized mom on the block.
There’s no formula, magic wand or family gene that makes someone organized. Just like cooking or playing an instrument, quelling the chaos around you is a talent that can be learned. Everyone has the ability to be organized; you just have to put those tidying muscles to good use.
If you want to develop your organizational superpowers, here are a few ideas to help:
- Have a place for everything. Yes, the old adage holds true. Make every effort to have assigned homes for all the items in your house. Having a place for everything and everything in its place lets you retrieve what you need quickly and easily. That means other people in your home (yes, even the kiddos) can put things back where they belong, and you won’t waste precious time searching for lost or misplaced items.
- Establish routines. Humans are creatures of habit, and the same rule of thumb applies to organization. Having set routines cuts down on the decisions you need to make, takes the guesswork out of what needs to be done and allows you to free your mind to focus on other things. Routines can also save you time and energy, as your body and mind get used to the ritual and your actions become automatic.
- Clear out the clutter. When there is too much stuff in your home or space, it can be difficult to find what you need. Take time to declutter those areas of your home that are swarmed with items you no longer need, use or want. Letting go of the unnecessary allows you to make room for what matters most. Not sure where to begin? Start with the areas of your home that get the most use (living room and kitchen, for example). Throw away any excess items that aren’t regularly used (even the random chachkies and knick-knacks collecting dust on every shelf) and sort them into three piles: storage, donations and items to sell. List all those goodies in the “sell” pile in your local VarageSale community, and you can put that extra cash toward something fun as a reward for your organized ways (who wouldn’t stay more organized if you could reward yourself with a relaxing mani-pedi or a dinner out?).
- Take time to plan. Whether it’s planning your day, your errands or your evening meals, preparation is the key to success. Spend 10-15 minutes each day sorting through everything on your to-do list. Having set plans for your day can help you accomplish more and prevent you from feeling scattered or stressed.
- Write it all down. Use a daily planner, a productivity app (such as the Any.do To-do List app), or a central home calendar to track your family’s busy schedule. Having a written record of all your activities can free your mind from all the tasks rattling around in there, help you avoid missing important appointments, and keep you from overextending yourself.
- Prioritize. Not everything that pops up in your day is important (or requires urgent attention). You have to know what is a priority for you and your family and let that be the guiding factor in the things you do and the choices you make. When you say yes to something, you’re saying no to something else. Make sure that your “yes” truly requires your attention and is the best way to spend your time.
- Delegate. As much as you’d like to believe that Supermom across the street does it all by herself, the truth is no one person can do everything and do it well. Seeking help and letting others shoulder some of the responsibility for household chores is critical for an orderly life and home. Whether you ask your family to help you (chore charts are a great way to get your little ones involved) or you hire a helper, delegating allows you to be more effective.
The most organized mom on the block isn’t a superhero, she’s just learned a few magical tidying tips. Whether you believe it or not, you also have what it takes. By implementing these ideas on a regular basis, you’ll find yourself well on your way to developing your organizational superpowers.
